I had such an amazing response from my Christmas Magic Sessions last year that I vowed to make them a tradition and am going to include more dates this year. Even so, they will be extremely limited as there are only so many days between Thanksgiving and Christmas and as you know, those tend to be some crazy busy days! Booking will begin on August 15th and I will offer a limited number of spots per week during the week of November 26th, December 10th and December 17th.  These are lifestyle photography sessions in Orange County intended to capture the beauty, joy and anticipation of childhood and the family Christmas Tree.

The Christmas Magic Sessions will be 30 minute lifestyle sessions in front of your tree at your home. These sessions are held after dark so that the only light source is from your Christmas Tree. I will provide you with a styling guide and sources for obtaining Christmas PJ’s that photograph well. I’ll also provide some suggestions as to the best type of lights for your tree down to the detail of wrapping paper for under it. Included with the session fee is five (5) fully edited digital images which will be delivered to you in both high-resolution as well as sized for social media sharing. You will also receive a custom heirloom ornament for your tree made using one of your images. The total cost for the session, five images and ornament is $275. I will also have add-on options available at the time of your session to increase the number of images to ten (10) for an additional $125 and for Custom Christmas Cards priced at $40 per pack of 25 cards. A deposit of $50 will be required to hold your space upon booking your Christmas Magic Session.  To see some samples of images taken during last year’s Christmas Magic sessions click here.

The only “Mini-Sessions” I’m offering this year will be at Peltzer Christmas Tree Farm in Brea on October 18th and October 21st. This will be a perfect opportunity to get custom family photographs done for holiday cards and gifts. These will be 15 minute sessions and will include five (5) fully edited images delivered to you digitally in both high and low resolutions for $175. You will also receive access to my full line of prints and products offered for ordering wall art or holiday gifts for loved ones. You will also have the option to upgrade your mini-session to 30 minutes and 10 fully edited images for $125. A deposit of $50 will be required to hold your space upon booking your Mini-Session.

If you aren’t able to make it to the mini-sessions I will be making myself more available in October and November for full custom family sessions as. Please contact me directly to discuss your vision and for booking information, otherwise I’ll be posting the link for booking the Christmas Magic and Tree Farm Mini’s HERE on August 15th!

UPDATE:  Oh my gosh, I WON!  You can’t imagine how excited I am about this incredible honor!
best new emerging child photographer finalist

I am beyond thrilled and honored to have been selected as one of the six finalists in the National Association of Professional Child Photographer’s “Best New Emerging Child Photographer” contest! It would be an absolute DREAM to win this recognition and incredibly learning opportunity for me and YOU can help me make that dream come true! It all comes down to a public vote and at the time that I’m writing this I appear to be in second place by only about 150 votes!

Click HERE to VOTE for me!

I first became aware of the NAPCP through some photography classes I was taking and looking at websites of some of my favorite child photographer’s I noticed that many of them were members of this group. So I was thrilled when I was notified a couple of weeks ago that I had received a nomination for this award!

best new emerging child photographer nominee orange county lifestyle photographer

Once I received the nomination I took a closer look at the details and oh my gosh look at this list of rewards to the one lucky winner!

  1. Expense paid trip to Atlanta, Georgia for an amazing experience. Our winner will spend time with the NAPCP team and the ShootProof team so we can celebrate them! This will include airfare (provided by ShootProof), plus lodging, meals, and live interviews (provided by NAPCP and ShootProof).
  2. NAPCP Membership– 2 Years
  3. ShootProofAccount – One Year

  13. Digital Seal for Website – Best New Emerging Child Photographer 2017
  14. Promotion from NAPCPShootProof, and sponsors on all Social Media and online websites

I didn’t allow myself to become too excited because I know that they were receiving hundreds of nominations from around the globe but I did go through some day dreaming about “what if….”! And then last week I received the news that I was among a group of 25 photographers who had been selected as the semi-finalists for the contest!

best new emerging child photographer semifinalist orange county

At that point it came down to the contest judges (Shannon Sewell – Shannon Sewell Photography; Barbara Griffin – Atlanta Celebrates Photography; Ali Nelson – Ali Makes Things; Ana-Maria Klizs – Bluebird Kisses; and Elizabeth Jacob – Babiekins Magazine). Their task was to select the six finalists from the group of 25 which brings us to today. Somehow I made this list of final six and now the public gets to vote for a winner!

What a crazy career impacting opportunity for all six of us and I am humbled and honored to be one of this incredible group! The educational opportunities and mentoring that come with the prize package is of such value to those of us who are just in the infancy of our child photography business. I am literally overwhelmed by just the thought of what this contest could mean for myself and my business.

In any event, I would love it if you would help turn this girl’s dream into a reality and cast your vote for Crow’s Nest Photography!

The link will take you directly to the voting page. Tap the “Vote Now” button. On the next screen enter your email address. The next time you check email, open the email from “WordPress” to activate your vote. Just a quick minute is all it takes to help a girl out!

Thank you so much!!!

While you may be used to seeing mostly color from me, this post is all about my black and white lifestyle photography. My passion for creating lifestyle family photographs that blend into realm of fine art photography continues to grow and black and white photography is an important element to that growth. I work on my lifestyle art a little bit every day with my own children but most of my newborn work to date has been studio based. As you may have seen in December with my Christmas Magic Sessions, I am working to expand special lifestyle photography sessions to the list of services that I offer. I’ll be doing this slowly until my kids are both in school but in the meantime, I’ll be sharing some of my personal lifestyle work here on my blog. If you want to see more – be sure to follow me on Instagram as I typically post there on a daily basis.

Speaking of Instagram and getting back to the black and white lifestyle photography point of this post, this past month, I spent a lot of time @thecandidclass specifically focusing on my black and white photography. Good black and white photography can do so much to elevate a lifestyle image to a work of art. The contrast and depth of the image can be highlighted and an overall “mood” created in a way that is limited when you introduce color. Black and white images also invoke the sense of timelessness and can appear “classic” today as well as a hundred years from now.

Here are some of my favorite black and white conversions that I worked on this month. Some of these images were shot intentionally for black and white, some were shot with my iPhone and edited entirely on my phone, and some were applying new skills I picked up through the Candid Class with post-processing in both Lightroom and Photoshop. All are in keeping with my goal of capturing everyday life as beautifully as I feel it. I hope you enjoy and see the beauty in my black and white lifestyle photography as well!

Oh, and I’ve got a special surprise at the end of this post!  I’m taking part in a blog circle with some photographer friends of mine.  We’re linking to each other’s posts, so you can check out what they’re up to. This month, I’m linking to a fabulous family photographer whom I’ve gotten to know through Instagram who is sharing a session in the foothills of Boise.

Being an Orange County Child Photographer, on occasion there are opportunities for me to connect with my community and “give” to some causes that are meaningful to me.  The month of February is dedicated to raising awareness of Congenital Heart Defects in children.  To participate, I am providing some complimentary portrait sessions to families in Orange County with a child who suffers from a CHD and posting pictures of the sessions with the tags #paperheartproject, #CHDawareness and #hearthero.    Here is Paul and his family’s story.  They are warriors and they are heroes with strength I can’t even fathom.

Paul John Schubert JR was born on September 28, 2012 with a severe congenital heart defect called HLHS, essentially he has 1/2 his heart with the entire Left ventricle being non-functioning. We were told about comfort care. We were told he had maybe a 30% chance at survival. We pushed through not knowing the outcome, not knowing if we were making the right choices at the time. Lots of two steps forward, three steps back. Lots of tears and prayers and lots of hospital beeping and wires. Lots of day’s as parents we looked like zombies (before zombies were cool). All the while he crept into doctors and nurses hearts who started rooting for him instead of not wanting to look us in the eye because they never thought he would make it through the day. They couldn’t help but get attached and fall in love because he was “Schubie”. He was the doctors “Boyfriend”. He spent the first 8 months of his life in CHOC (Children’s Hospital of Orange County) while mommy and daddy juggled his twin brother Luke at home. Paul has had 7 cardiac catheterizations, 2 open heart surgeries with a 3rd planned for April 2017 a g-tube surgery and too many EKG’s, Echocardiograms, dosages of medications and doctors visits to even count! He is seriously one of the toughest kids I’ve ever met. He is my hero. He’s a pretty tough nut to crack only in front of a camera otherwise he’s a serious nut! I don’t understand the “why’s or how’s” of CHD and I thought I’d spend my time as a mom teaching my kids about the world around them, instead I teach the world about my child’s heart condition…& spread his story because each time I do someone else can learn about how he is 1 in 100. -Love Twin Heart Momma (Amber Schubert) & Daddy Paul Schubert and Twin bro bro Luke

This three month old portrait session with baby Tessa and parents was so special to me.  I have known Tessa’s mommy since Jr. High!  The Nayala family just moved back to Southern California about a month before Tessa made her very early arrival in this world.  Not even unpacked yet before practically moving into the hospital for the long haul, the transition was challenging to say the least.  Fortunately, Tessa is a crazy strong girl like her mother and after about a month in the hospital she was finally able to go home with mom and dad.

Because Tessa was in the NICU for so long, by the time I was able to get her newborn portraits done even though still tiny, she was awake and stretchy (just look at those legs)!  There is a reason we newborn photographers recommend that you get your newborn portraits done within about 10 days of birth for the posed newborn portraits but all is not lost if you miss that window.  In this case, we did a second family portrait shoot when Tessa was three months old and I am just in love with how the images came out during her three month old portrait session.

So much love and fun in this family and it shows through within these family portraits.  You can’t see the struggle they went through to get this baby girl home but you can see the love that they have for each other and that they would do anything for this precious baby girl.
